Catholic Life Flag Day observance features Mass, patriotism, pledge

Catholic Life Insurance hosted its 25th annual Flag Day observance on the grounds of their headquarters building June 14.

The event began with an outdoor Mass celebrated by Father Larry Christian, vicar general of the Archdiocese of San Antonio, and concelebrated by Msgr. Frank Kurzaj.

Following the liturgy, Catholic Life President/CEO Mike Belz gave a history of Flag Day and the birth of the American flag. During the tribute, he recognized the Flag Day Children’s Poster Contest winners, as well as the Flag Day Girl Scouts Patch Design Contest winner.

Attendees then witnessed an “old-fashioned flag raising” of a 30 x 60 foot American flag on a 160-foot flagpole.

A brass band quartet played patriotic music throughout the event, including “God Bless America,” “America, My Country, ‘Tis of Thee,’” “America the Beautiful,” “The Star-Spangled Banner” and more.

Recent Reagan High School graduate and all state choir member Morgan Teel performed an a capella rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner,” and afterwards all of the children were invited to come forward to lead everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance.

At the conclusion of the gathering, attendees enjoyed a picnic, and the children were entertained with face painting and balloon animals.
