{"id":19606,"date":"2023-12-22T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-12-22T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/satodayscatholic.org\/?p=19606"},"modified":"2023-12-21T09:52:25","modified_gmt":"2023-12-21T15:52:25","slug":"vatican-doctrine-office-reaffirms-that-catholics-cannot-be-freemasons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satodayscatholic.org\/vatican-doctrine-office-reaffirms-that-catholics-cannot-be-freemasons\/","title":{"rendered":"Catholic Relief Services warns of disease, \u2018long-term\u2019 hunger amid devastating Ghana flood"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is warning of a potential humanitarian crisis in Ghana after a \u201cdevastating\u201d flood in the southeastern part of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"652\" height=\"430\" src=\"https:\/\/satodayscatholic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Screenshot-2023-12-21-095107.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19613\" style=\"width:372px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/satodayscatholic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Screenshot-2023-12-21-095107.png 652w, https:\/\/satodayscatholic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Screenshot-2023-12-21-095107-300x198.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 652px) 100vw, 652px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Catholic Relief Services warns of disease, &#8216;long-term&#8217; hunger amid devastating Ghana flood<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The flooding occurred last month when the Akosombo and Kpong dams were subject to a controlled spillage that \u201ccaused a devastating flood\u201d in Lake Volta, CRS&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.crs.org\/media-center\/news-release\/crs-responds-flood-disaster-volta-region-ghana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said in a press release.<\/a><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daniel Mumuni, the relief organization\u2019s country representative in Ghana, said in the release that \u201cthousands of people have already lost their homes, crops, and livestock because of the flooding.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere could be disease outbreaks and devastating long-term impacts on hunger as 200,000 hectares remain covered by water,\u201d Mumuni said, according to a Catholic News Agency report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The press release stated that the \u201ccurrent level of assistance from the government and other partners has been insufficient to meet the overwhelming needs of the affected population.\u201d Those needs include \u201cfood, shelter, clothing, and safe drinking water.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some displaced residents \u201chave found shelter in \u2018safe havens,\u2019 established by the government in schools and churches in the districts of Central Tongu and North Tongu,\u201d CRS said. Mumuni said these havens were offering victims of the floods \u201csome relief.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut the longer families are removed from their homes, the longer their children are missing school, and the larger the impact gets on their lives,\u201d he pointed out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The flooding has disrupted \u201cwater and power supplies, health services, and education,\u201d CRS said. Further risks were present from \u201cwaterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and typhoid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAccess to the more than 80 flooded communities has been difficult, as many roads have been submerged or destroyed by the floods,\u201d CRS said. \u201cBoats are currently the only means of transportation for rescue and emergency aid.\u201d<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mumuni said response teams \u201chave just concluded a rapid assessment of the situation together with the local diocese and other stakeholders\u201d and that though the spillage has stopped and the floodwaters were gradually receding, \u201cit is still difficult to reach people.\u201d<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe situation is critical,\u201d Mumuni said. \u201cWe need more support to reach the most vulnerable people and prevent any outbreak of disease.\u201d<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is warning of a potential humanitarian crisis in Ghana after a \u201cdevastating\u201d flood in the southeastern part of the country.
