{"id":19451,"date":"2023-09-24T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-09-24T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/satodayscatholic.org\/?p=19451"},"modified":"2023-09-12T11:35:07","modified_gmt":"2023-09-12T16:35:07","slug":"bishop-warns-about-hard-times-argentina-is-going-through","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satodayscatholic.org\/bishop-warns-about-hard-times-argentina-is-going-through\/","title":{"rendered":"Bishop warns about \u2018hard times\u2019 Argentina is going through"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The auxiliary bishop of Santiago del Estero in Argentina, Enrique Mart\u00ednez Ossola, recently spoke about the \u201cdifficult times\u201d the country is going through, the current political situation, and the problems of drug trafficking and addiction in an interview with the local television program \u201cLibertad de Opini\u00f3n.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/satodayscatholic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Argentina2.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19452\" style=\"width:349px;height:233px\" width=\"349\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/satodayscatholic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Argentina2.webp 670w, https:\/\/satodayscatholic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Argentina2-300x200.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 349px) 100vw, 349px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Bishop warns about \u2018hard times\u2019 Argentina is going through<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cDrugs kill and poison the family,\u201d the prelate said, noting that \u201cthere is no effective response from the state\u201d and the public health system \u201cis overwhelmed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDrug trafficking,\u201d he pointed out, \u201cmoves a lot of money, has a lot of influence and gets into government structures, corrupting police officers, corrupting authorities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also referred to the \u201ccaptive market\u201d of drug trafficking, a situation that \u201ccreates a spiral of violence, unheard of robberies, losing one\u2019s life over a cellphone,\u201d because the money \u201censures a [fix] for a couple of days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faced with this scourge, he recalled the words of St. Peter: \u201cI have neither silver nor gold, but what I do have I give you: in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazorean, rise and walk [Acts 3:6\u20137].\u201dMart\u00ednez then encouraged faith, solidarity, and respect: \u201cThere are tough neighborhoods, there are some scourges that go out and do their mischief, but there are many decent people who live in those poor neighborhoods, who hold onto values of solidarity, respect, and dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The effects of drugs lead to \u201caberrant\u201d behavior, the prelate stated, and \u201cthe only way to confront it is in faith, acting on the commitment that we Christians must have, and it\u2019s the call of Pope Francis to be protagonists, to not [look on at a safe distance], as he says\u201d and to face the situation with \u201cyour feet in the mud.\u201dHe also referred to the economic instability and uncertainty, a situation that suggests that the only way out is to get on a plane and leave the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are also dissolving the family nucleus. There are orphaned children with living parents, because the father or mother doesn\u2019t have time, because of work, because of this, because of that&#8230; and we see the child as a nuisance, as a burden, and not as a gift from God,\u201d Mart\u00ednez commented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the context of the presidential election campaign in Argentina, the prelate clarified that the solutions to the problems \u201cdo not depend only on leaders with charisma but on men with maturity, with depth, who dedicate their lives to the service of the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe see rich politicians in a poor society, and that cannot be,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are people who make a living from politics. Some may claim that they have a title, but that they have never exercised it\u201d or just when they got started, \u201cbecause they became entrenched in government jobs,\u201d he observed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, the prelate agreed with the presidential candidate for the political coalition La Libertad Avanza (Liberty Advances), Javier Milei, when referring to \u201cthe caste.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cActually Milei, when he talks about \u2018caste,\u2019 is right. There is a political caste that has all the rights. They are doing well, they have a house, food, income, possibilities for advancement, but there\u2019s inequality,\u201d he lamented. \u201cPolitics is the government of public affairs, but the sovereign has to be the people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need a more participatory democracy, where we all commit to the search for the common good,\u201d Mart\u00ednez commented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, addressing the candidates, he insisted: \u201cAlways aspire to serve the people, don\u2019t forget where you come from.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He asked the leaders \u201cto listen to the voice of the people, to be faithful to the people who have anointed you with power. The power is not yours, it\u2019s the people\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, he asked citizens to be responsible and honest in the fulfillment of their duties and to always consider \u201cthose who suffer, those who are in need, those who are worse off than us,\u201d as well as having \u201ca united and solidary heart\u201d and above all \u201cthat we all bend the knee only before God and that we be free.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Milei, who won the most votes in the recent presidential primary, is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/255305\/the-rise-of-javier-milei-a-false-messiah-in-pope-francis-homeland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a controversial figure from a Catholic point of view in Argentina<\/a>&nbsp;as his libertarian positions variously support or go against Catholic values.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The auxiliary bishop
