In a new interview published January 25, Pope Francis said the death of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI meant he had lost a \u201cgood companion\u201d and a father figure.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI lost a dad,\u201d Pope Francis told the Associated Press<\/a>, praising his predecessor \u2014 who died on Dec. 31, 2022, at the age of 95 \u2014 as a \u201cgentleman.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n Pope Francis said he would visit Benedict for counsel at the converted monastery Mater Ecclesiae in the Vatican Gardens, where the retired pope resided. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFor me, he was a security. In the face of a doubt, I would ask for the car and go to the monastery and ask.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The 86-year-old pontiff called Benedict\u2019s decision to live in Mater Ecclesiae a \u201cgood intermediate solution\u201d in the wide-ranging interview<\/a> that also included remarks about the Church\u2019s stance on homosexuality, the German Synodal Way \u2014 and his health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pope Francis has repeatedly praised his predecessor. In April of last year, he described Benedict as \u201ca prophet\u201d<\/a> of the Church\u2019s future and in November acknowledged his leadership<\/a> in responding to sexual abuse. On Jan. 4<\/a>, he said Benedict brought Catholics to an \u201cencounter with Jesus.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n Pope Francis, who has not ruled out retiring, said Benedict\u2019s decision to live in a converted monastery in the Vatican Gardens was a \u201cgood intermediate solution\u201d but that future retired popes might want to do things differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHe was still \u2018enslaved\u2019 as a pope, no?\u201d Pope Francis said, according to a Catholic News Agency report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOf the vision of a pope, of a system. \u2018Slave\u2019 in the good sense of the word: In that he wasn\u2019t completely free, as he would have liked to have returned to his Germany and continued studying theology.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
