Juan Vargas Reunion

Descendants of Juan Vargas, Texas patriot and patron of the early Diocese of San Antonio, held their largest reunion ever on November 17 at Comanche Park, with between 600 to 700 attending. Vargas, an Aztec who fought beside Father Miguel Hidalgo in Mexico, later moved to Texas, where he resisted recruitment by General Santa Anna and was forced to carry the Alamo dead to their pyre. He lived to be 115 and donated his family chapel and land to became Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. A story on his life appeared in the Oct. 26, 2018 issue of Today’s Catholic.
