Homily – Ascension of the Lord
Uvalde – May 29, 2022
The Church is a mother. La Iglesia es madre. All the baptized are represented here by this congregation. We are all members of the Church. Todos somos Iglesia. As a mother to those suffering in Uvalde, today we look up, towards heaven, begging the Father to show them his mercy. And we embrace the families as a mother her children. We cry like a mother does! Our children have been taken away! The pain of families in Uvalde is our own. We need to pray passionately for them and their children.
Throughout these days I have experienced the goodness in people, in the midst of suffering and loss. Hemos visto estos días la bondad de la gente en medio del dolor.
Reflecting about Jesus’ message of peace, Pope Francis has said that in the last hours of his life, Jesus “feels fear and pain, but does not give way to resentment (…) He does not allow himself to become bitter, he does not vent, he is not impatient. He is at peace, a peace that comes from his meek heart accustomed to trust. Jesús es la fuente de nuestra paz. For no one can give others peace if they do not have it within themselves.”
After he rises from the dead, Jesus does not return to take revenge on those who murdered or abandoned him. His first greeting to his disciples is: “Peace be with you.” Las palabras del Resucitado son: “La paz esté con ustedes”. He gave his life for us by dying on the cross to give us the fullness of life.
Thanks to him we are a people of life. He allows us to deeply embrace the pain as we go through it and enables us to comfort with hope those who mourn. He strengthens us in times of trial. For God no life is lost. Jesus is our Savior. Today, as he has finished his mission, he invites us to look up, awaiting “the promise of the Father”: he sends The Holy Spirit!
The total glorification of Jesus happens from the moment of the Resurrection, which is very concretely tied to history, to the world and to our earthly lives. The Ascension proclaims and confirms our faith in the Risen One. At the same time, it points and draws our gaze upwards, propelling our hope towards the final goal. Jesús nos invita a vivir desde Él, hasta el final.
Jesus reveals to us that our faith and our love are inseparable from our hope, and He opens for us a brighter horizon. The hope of who we are called to be will always overpower our imagination. Our faith allows us to trust that our children in Uvalde who left us, already enjoy endless joy.
After the Passion and Death, the disciples need to experience the Master fully alive. The community of disciples also needs to “resurrect” — so to speak — from their fears, from their sorrow, from their errors. Their faith is consolidated. The Lord’s task in history has been fulfilled. Heaven is open to all, for all are called to share God’s salvation. Jesús nos abrió el camino para llegar al cielo.
Reflecting on the mystery we celebrate today, Pope Benedict XVI said: (quote) “The Ascension of the Lord means that Christ has not departed from us, but that he is now, thanks to his being with the Father, close to each one of us for ever. Each one of us can be on intimate terms with him; each can call upon him. The Lord is always within hearing. We can inwardly draw away from him. We can live turning our backs on him. But he always waits for us and is always close to us.” (End of quote).
When Pope Francis visited the United States, he described a contemporary world with open wounds which affect so many of our brothers and sisters, and gave us some guidelines to move forward, I quote:
Our response must (…) be one of hope and healing, of peace and justice (…) Our efforts must aim at restoring hope, righting wrongs, maintaining commitments, and thus promoting the well-being of individuals and of all peoples. We must move forward together, as one, in a renewed spirit of fraternity and solidarity, cooperating generously for the common good.
The challenges facing us today call for a renewal of that spirit of cooperation, which has accomplished so much good throughout the history of the United States. The complexity, the gravity and the urgency of these challenges demand that we pool our resources and talents, and resolve to support one another, with respect for our differences and our convictions of conscience.” End of quote.
These words speak to us in our present situation, here, in Uvalde.
The risen Jesus wants to continue to make himself present to the world through the new life given to his community. Jesús quiere vivirse en nosotros, y a través de nosotros, dando vida al mundo. The disciples do not want to be separated from Jesus, but it is better for them that He goes, for the Holy Spirit to continue the work through their hearts. The Ascension was the right time to leave the resurrected community in the hands of the Consoler, The Holy Spirit, who must lead it to the end. The Church must come out of herself. We are called to console, to make God present in the world, to be peacemakers. La invitación es a ser instrumentos de su paz.
The Holy Spirit empowers us to be partakers in the mission of Jesus. He sends us to the whole world to announce peace, concretely living his new commandment to love one another. Amémonos de corazón. We must not remain idle, staring at the sky, thinking about the return of Jesus and expecting him to do what He commands us to do. We must assume our responsibility to make God’s love present everywhere. Between the moment of the Ascension and the end of time, our action is necessary to communicate God’s message of peace and salvation to all. We must work and pray, transforming history through the Spirit of Jesus. Let us listen to his words:
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives it. Let not your hearts be troubled or afraid.” “La paz les dejo, mi paz les doy; no se las doy como la da el mundo. No se turbe su corazón ni se acobarde.” (John 14:27)
“Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy” (John 16:20).
Our Lady of Guadalupe, María, Madre de Dios por quien se vive, help us to keep the words of Jesus in our minds and in our hearts, as we, a Synodal Church, transformed by hope, rebuild our tomorrow!

Homilía – La Ascensión del Señor

La Iglesia es madre. Todos los bautizados son representados aquí por esta congregación. Todos somos miembros de la Iglesia. Como madre de los que sufren en Uvalde, hoy miramos hacia arriba, hacia el cielo, rogando al Padre que les muestre su misericordia. Y abrazamos a las familias como una madre a sus hijos. ¡Lloramos como una madre! ¡Nuestros hijos nos han sido arrebatados! El dolor de las familias en Uvalde es el nuestro. Necesitamos orar apasionadamente por ellos y por sus hijos.
A lo largo de estos días he experimentado la bondad de las personas, en medio del sufrimiento y la pérdida.
Reflexionando sobre el mensaje de paz de Jesús, el Papa Francisco ha dicho que en las últimas horas de su vida, el Señor “experimenta miedo y dolor, pero no deja espacio al resentimiento… No se deja llevar por la amargura, no se desahoga, no se muestra incapaz de soportar. Está en paz, una paz que proviene de su corazón manso, habitado por la confianza. Y de ahí surge la paz que Jesús nos deja. Porque no se puede dejar la paz a los demás si uno no la tiene en sí mismo”.
Después de resucitar de entre los muertos, Jesús no regresa para vengarse de quienes lo asesinaron o lo abandonaron. Su primer saludo a sus discípulos es: “La paz esté con ustedes”. Él dio su vida por nosotros muriendo en la cruz para darnos la plenitud de la vida. Gracias a él somos un pueblo de vida. Él nos permite abrazar profundamente el dolor mientras lo atravesamos y nos hace capaces de consolar con esperanza a los que lloran. Él nos fortalece en tiempos de prueba. Para Dios ninguna vida se pierde. Jesús es nuestro Salvador. Hoy que ha culminado su misión, nos invita a mirar hacia arriba, a la espera de “la promesa del Padre”: ¡envía el Espíritu Santo!
La glorificación total de Jesús sucede desde el momento de la Resurrección, que está muy concretamente ligada a la historia, al mundo y a nuestra vida terrena. La Ascensión proclama y confirma nuestra fe en el Resucitado. Al mismo tiempo, apunta y atrae nuestra mirada hacia arriba, impulsando nuestra esperanza hacia la meta final. Jesús nos invita a vivir desde Él, hasta el final.
Jesús nos revela que nuestra fe y nuestro amor son inseparables de nuestra esperanza, y nos abre un horizonte más luminoso. La esperanza de lo que estamos llamados a ser siempre superará a nuestra imaginación. Nuestra fe nos permite confiar que nuestros hijos en Uvalde, que se nos fueron, ya gozan de una alegría infinita.
Después de la Pasión y Muerte, los discípulos necesitan experimentar al Maestro plenamente vivo. La comunidad de discípulos también necesita “resucitar” – por así decirlo – de sus miedos, de sus dolores, de sus errores. Su fe es consolidada. La tarea del Señor en la historia se ha cumplido. El cielo está abierto a todos, porque todos están llamados a compartir la salvación de Dios. Jesús nos abrió el camino para llegar al cielo.
Reflexionando sobre el misterio que celebramos hoy, el Papa Benedicto XVI dijo: “la Ascensión del Señor significa que Cristo no se ha alejado de nosotros, sino que ahora, gracias a su estar con el Padre, está cerca de cada uno de nosotros, para siempre. Cada uno de nosotros puede tratarlo de tú; cada uno puede llamarlo. El Señor está siempre atento a nuestra voz. Nosotros podemos alejarnos de él interiormente. Podemos vivir dándole la espalda. Pero él nos espera siempre, y está siempre cerca de nosotros.”
Cuando el Papa Francisco visitó Estados Unidos, describió un mundo contemporáneo con heridas abiertas que afectan a tantos de nuestros hermanos y hermanas, y nos dio algunas pautas para seguir adelante: Nuestra respuesta, dijo, “es de esperanza y de reconciliación, de paz y de justicia. (…) Nuestro trabajo se centra en devolver la esperanza, corregir las injusticias, mantener la fe en los compromisos, promoviendo así la recuperación de las personas y de los pueblos. Ir hacia delante juntos, en un renovado espíritu de fraternidad y solidaridad, cooperando con entusiasmo al bien común.
El reto que tenemos que afrontar hoy nos pide una renovación del espíritu de colaboración que ha producido tanto bien a lo largo de la historia de Estados Unidos. La complejidad, la gravedad y la urgencia de tal desafío exige poner en común los recursos y los talentos que poseemos y empeñarnos en sostenernos mutuamente, respetando las diferencias y las convicciones de conciencia”.
Estas palabras nos hablan en nuestra situación actual, aquí, en Uvalde.
Jesús resucitado quiere seguir haciéndose presente al mundo a través de la vida nueva dada a su comunidad. Jesús quiere vivirse en nosotros, y a través de nosotros, dando vida al mundo. Los discípulos no quieren separarse de Jesús, pero es mejor para ellos que Él se vaya, para que el Espíritu Santo siga obrando en sus corazones. La Ascensión fue el momento propicio para dejar la comunidad resucitada en manos del Consolador, el Espíritu Santo, que debe conducirla hasta el final. La Iglesia debe salir de sí misma. Estamos llamados a consolar, a hacer presente a Dios en el mundo, a ser constructores de paz. La invitación es a ser instrumentos de su paz.
El Espíritu Santo nos capacita para ser partícipes de la misión de Jesús. Nos envía al mundo entero para anunciar la paz, viviendo de manera concreta su mandamiento nuevo de amarnos los unos a los otros. Amémonos de corazón. No debemos quedarnos ociosos, mirando al cielo, pensando en el regreso de Jesús y esperando que Él haga lo que Él mismo nos manda a hacer. Debemos asumir nuestra responsabilidad de hacer presente el amor de Dios en todas partes. Entre el momento de la Ascensión y el final de los tiempos, nuestra acción es necesaria para comunicar a todos el mensaje de paz y salvación de Dios.
Debemos trabajar y orar, transformando la historia por el Espíritu de Jesús. Escuchemos sus palabras: “La paz les dejo, mi paz les doy; no se las doy como la da el mundo. No se turbe su corazón ni se acobarde” (Juan 14,27).
“Les aseguro que ustedes van a llorar y se van a lamentar; el mundo, en cambio, se alegrará. Ustedes estarán tristes, pero esa tristeza se convertirá en gozo” (Juan 16, 20).
Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, María, Madre de Dios por quien se vive, ayúdanos a conservar las palabras de Jesús en nuestra mente y en nuestro corazón, mientras nosotros, Iglesia sinodal, transformada por la esperanza, ¡reconstruimos nuestro mañana!
